Word art, also called a text portrait or typographic portrait, rebuilds a photo out of words instead of pixels. Big words fill the bright, open areas, small words trace the details, and the colours come straight from your photo. It is the gift that says something twice: once in the picture, once in the words.

How the word art generator works

Imagia reads the light and shape of your photo and packs your words into it, biggest first, following the direction of the features so letters flow along a jawline or a strand of hair. Nothing overlaps, and every word stays readable.

Colours are sampled from the photo itself, so the portrait keeps the warmth of skin and the colour of the eyes. You can make it vivid, soft, light on dark or dark on white.

What words to use

Anything that belongs to the person in the picture: names of family and friends, the places you've been together, lyrics of your song, the vows from the wedding, inside jokes, a poem. Put each phrase on its own line, or paste a whole list at once and it is split into phrases for you.

Every language and script works — Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and more — even mixed in one portrait.

Print-ready, at any size

Word art downloads as a high-resolution JPEG or as a vector PDF or SVG. Vector files stay perfectly sharp at any size, so the portrait can be printed as a framed poster, a canvas or a large wall piece without the words going blurry. Prefer photos to words? The same studio is an online photo mosaic maker too.

Common questions

What is a word art portrait?

A picture of a person, pet or place drawn entirely from words. Up close you read the words; from a distance you see the photo.

How many words do I need?

A handful works — the generator repeats them in different sizes. Ten to fifty phrases gives the richest result.

Can I use names in other languages?

Yes. Any language and script is supported, including Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese and Korean, and they can be mixed.

Is it free?

Creating and previewing word art is free. You only pay to download the full-resolution JPEG or vector file.
